AI, USM, and the Coming Apocalypse

It started, as these things do, in a haze of coffee fumes and existential dread at an Open Service Community (OSC) meetup—a handful of grizzled veterans debating the next implosion of service management. Then, like a divine joke, Matt Beran tossed out a LinkedIn survey that confirmed what we feared: the industry is charging headfirst into the AI-driven future without a damn clue how to manage it.

For years, we’ve cycled through buzzwords like a junkie with a fresh stash—ITIL, DevOps, XLA, Agile—each promising salvation, each ultimately revealing the same grim truth: without a unified system of service management (USM), it’s all just another expensive hallucination.

Now, AI is the new drug on the block, and we’re about to overdose.

The Service Management Death Spiral

Imagine an AI so advanced, so finely tuned, that it can predict your problems before they exist. Sounds great, right? Except that without structured service governance, it doesn’t know the difference between fixing your server and launching your entire network into the sun. AI doesn’t care about your business objectives—it just optimizes whatever chaos you feed it.

This is the problem. The industry is hurtling toward AI-driven service automation, but nobody’s talking about managing it. We’re repeating the same mistakes we made with ITIL, DevOps, and XLA—throwing tools and frameworks at problems without a universal, unifying governance system to hold it all together.

USM: The Old Lessons Are Staring You in the Face

USM is not new—it’s just the thing everyone ignores until it’s too late. A structured, tool-agnostic, domain-independent, unified service management system that actually makes sense of the madness.

The AI revolution isn’t going to wait for us to figure out service management. The organizations that embrace USM now—before the AI apocalypse truly hits—will be the ones left standing. The rest will be buried under mountains of broken automation, hallucinated AI decisions, and vendor contracts they barely understand.

Ringing the Alarm Bells

We’ve been here before. Every time a new technology comes along, people get high on the possibilities and forget that management doesn’t reinvent itself—it just adapts. So here are the warning shots, loud and clear:

🔔 AI will not fix your broken processes. It will expose them. 🔔 If you don’t have a unified governance model, AI will create a nightmare of fragmented decisions. 🔔 You cannot afford to learn this lesson the hard way. USM is the answer, and it’s been right in front of you all along.

What Happens Next?

Two roads diverge in a chaotic, AI-infested forest:

  • Road One: You pretend this isn’t happening. You watch as your service management crumbles under the weight of bad AI-driven decisions. You wake up one morning and realize your automated incident resolution system has classified your CEO’s email as a cyberattack and shut down the entire company.
  • Road Two: You wise up. You implement USM as a governance framework before the bots take over. You realize that experience management, AI, DevOps, and ITIL all need a universal, structured system to actually function properly. You survive.

Final Thoughts: Read the Damn White Paper

For those who want the sober version of this conversation, read the white paper (you know, the one with actual sources and no screaming). But if you want to keep riding this train until the wheels fall off—just don’t say we didn’t warn you when the AI decides your service desk team is the root cause of all your problems and fires them itself.

The future is coming fast. You in?
